Abstract

Social support is how one is cared for and has assistance available from other people. This generic qualitative study explored unique experiences of social support in online classes among Asian international students in China who took online classes from their home country during COVID-19. We found that students received social support with the natural emergency of emotional social support while they reported that instrumental social support is lacking due to COVID-19. Participants felt psychologically connected with the instructors in China in the online classes but need more support in tangible learning resources and assistance. We offer lights to online course developers, instructors, and international program coordinators in Chinese universities hosting international students on providing related social support.
