Crossing Thresholds in Search of Educational Justice: Freedom Dreaming and World-Building With the Arts

Abstract

As an act of radical hope in the midst of turmoil and trauma, this arts-based research project took inspiration from Roy’s (2020) positing that the pandemic could be envisioned as a “portal” to “walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world.” In conversation with the abolitionist scholarship of Love (2019) and concepts of freedom dreaming within the work of Kelley (2002), this paper explores what happened when a diverse collective of K-12 teachers, preservice teachers and mental health counselors, and K-12 students drew upon the arts to create education freedom dreams. Through analysis of art created in response to a world building activity, this paper explores the affordances of arts-based research methodologies for instigating educational change.
