Promoting students’ understanding about criteria and their use of criteria for what counts as good models contributes to their growth in reasoning. While research has shown that 5th graders can justify criteria importance, there is a gap in the research about how they appropriately use those criteria. Guided by the model-centered, metamodeling approach, we conducted pre- and post- interviews to examine what kinds of criteria students valued when evaluating models, and if their valued criteria changed as they participated in a model-based inquiry unit about eutrophication. We found that students used the criteria introduced in the unit appropriately, consistently referencing and reasoning about them across groups although they still valued some of their own pre-existing epistemic beliefs.
