Investigating the Effects of Online Administration on Parent Responses to a School Climate Survey

Abstract

The School Climate Parent Survey has been administered in South Carolina (SC) public schools for the last two decades; however beginning in 2021, surveys were completed online instead of “hard copy”. This study aimed to examine changes in the respondent population after the shift to online administration with expanded respondent population. The relationship between the respondent changes and poverty index was further explored at the school level. Results suggested more responses were received in 2021, but response rates for online administration were relatively lower. Additionally, most of the increased responses were from schools with lower poverty. The findings call for more efforts to the enhancement of response rate, especially in schools of higher poverty, when delivering school climate surveys online.
