Abstract

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the conceptual and theoretical work on place-based education (PBE). The field is ripe for such a review, which includes a (re)evaluation of PBE’s history, scope of work, theory of change, and an exploration of potential lines of inquiry and practice. This review brings critical spatial and Indigenous theories of place, space, and justice to bear on the PBE literature and in doing so argues for the utility of these frames in future work on PBE. This review focuses on critical pedagogy of place and Indigenous education and explores their potential to further social, racial, and environmental justice. Throughout, this review centers major critiques of PBE, particularly those raised by critical and Indigenous scholars.
