An Examination of Asian/Asian American Counselors in the Time of COVID-19: A Changing Sociopolitical Landscape (Poster 12)

Abstract

From Asians/Asian Americans being blamed for starting the Covid-19 pandemic, to the race-based shootings of Asian employees at spas in Atlanta, anti-Asian sentiment in America has been extremely high. It is vital to investigate the unique issues that Asian/Asian American clinicians face as they provide services to students and their families who come from different cultural backgrounds and ways of life. This paper presentation will present a review of research about how counselors of color engage in conversations around culture and the current sociopolitical climate with their students and their families, with a focus on the Asian/Asian American experience. Suggestions for incorporating aspects of cultural humility and social justice into school-based counseling practices moving forward will also be presented.
