An Inquiry Into and Review of Classroom Dialogue and Discussion

Fri, April 14, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

This inquiry seeks to lay out a useful terrain on dialogue and discussion as components of the discursive tradition. It examines theoretical frameworks to ground this topic, as well as a preliminary overview of how educational researchers and other academics have studied this communicative process to advance classroom learning. In addition, the review offers suggestions as to where scholarship falls short theoretically and methodologically, and how it might benefit from additional methodological work that has yet to take up analysis. It concludes with implications both within and without school contexts.
