Development of Mathematical Skills: Variable- and Person-Oriented Approaches

Abstract

The development of mathematical skills is widely studied; however, most of the longitudinal research is variable-oriented and thus leads to somewhat superficial conclusions regarding students’ development. So far there is a lack of extensive longitudinal studies that investigate person-oriented developmental patterns of math skills. Accordingly, the current study aimed to describe the general development of math skills and also profiles of calculation and word-problem solving skills through Grades 1 to 9. The sample included 1023 Estonian students. Students filled in math tests that were based on the national curriculum in Grades 1, 2, 3, 6, and 9. The results indicated that there is heterogeneity in skill profiles through the school years and as well the developmental trajectories.
