Abstract

This study examined the effects of students’ motivational factors, students’ experience of bullying, students’ sense of school belonging, and school climate factors on eighth-grade math and science achievement in U.S. using data from
the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) of 2019. Two-level cross-sectional hierarchicaln linear models were developed to analyze the data. The results showed that there was a significant variation in math and science achievement across U.S. schools. It also showed that only students’ confidence in math and school SES had
a statistically significant effect on students’ math achievement. Only school location and school SES had a significant effect on science achievement. How to improve students' math and science achievement were discussed.
