Centering Courage, Compassion, and Empathy: A Longitudinal Asian American and Pacific Islander Equity Audit of the Pre-K–12 Public Educational System

Sun, April 16, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

The researchers of this study have conducted an Asian American equity audit of the PK-12 public education system to better understand the extent to which silencing, and erasure occur at the systems level. This report contains public data collected from state and local education agencies (N=122) using four equity audit codes: achievement equity, organizational leadership equity, programmatic and policy equity, and teaching quality. The findings presented in this report show that vulnerable Asian American student groups are hidden, glossed over, or even erased within the data due to the aggregated “Asian” label. This report underscores the need for data disaggregation and more dialogue on how to combat the non-Asian narrative.
