Abstract

This study is aimed at exploring how teachers in three nations—Taiwan, Korea, and Japan—teach WWII in the Asian context that have impacted students’ learning of history education. Using a case study design, this study documents three social studies teacher educators and in-service teachers’ experiences of teaching WWII in Asian contexts. Findings illuminate each country faced different challenges when teaching WWII in Asian contexts but shared some similar difficulties. In addition, the findings also illustrate that in-service teachers –as teacher as agency— made decisions for teaching WWII in Asian contexts that reflect the broader educational challenges faced by teachers who work within the context of such social controversy.
