Abstract

Educators frequently punitively discipline Black girls, often for issues related to classroom management (Blake et al., 2011). In order to better understand how Black adolescent girls reason about educators’ exclusionary responses to classroom management issues, this study integrates quotes extracted from 17 studies in which Black girls discussed their school experiences. Preliminary qualitative analyses find Black adolescent girls negatively evaluate educators’ choice to exclude them based on reasoning that: a) educators do not consider the context of the girls’ behavior, b) educators’ choices to exclude are shaped by bias and discrimination, and c) educators’ exclusionary responses negatively impact their engagement in the school setting. Implications for research and educators’ disciplinary approaches are discussed.
