Abstract

This paper tries to investigate how the state-level reservation policies in admissions to Indian higher education institutions for "Other Backward Classes" (OBCs) affect their higher educational attainment by gender. Using several rounds of data from the National Sample Survey in India, we find that state-level policies have no significant effect on the OBC group, whether female or male. Additionally, the results of heterogeneous effects analyses show that girls who are facing competition in resource-constrained households may be less likely to go to universities because of the social norms of son preferences.
