Proximity and Practice: Enacted Whiteness and Antiblackness in the Experiences of Black Faculty

Abstract

A large body of empirical research has illustrated the racialized and gendered experiences of Black faculty in the U.S. Most of the empirical literature about Black faculty over the past 15 years have used critical race theory (CRT) in foregrounding their narratives and structural analyses of racism and sexism. Notwithstanding their significant contributions to understanding Black faculty members’ experiences, these studies largely do not advance an analysis of how anti-blackness and whiteness, in particular, shape these experiences. Accordingly, this critical co-constructed autoethnography blends BlackCrit (Dumas & ross, 2016) and critical whiteness studies to explore the racialized experiences of four Black tenure-track faculty.
