Seeing It for Themselves: Visual Media for Fostering Student Literacy

Abstract

Using visual media within classrooms could foster positive literacy outcomes and be a welcome positive benefit for educational research. Using media can improve literacy through new alternative literate spaces (Hull & Katz, 2006). Alternative literacy spaces potentially foster different forms of literacy through various media. This could take many forms like implementing a curricular program involving visual media as suggested by my research.

However, despite this potential, alternative literacy spaces may not provide a comprehensive strategy to improve literacy. Unfortunately, consensus has not been reached with regard to the role visuals plays in literacy acquisition and development.

This conceptual roundtable session/poster discusses some of the positives and negatives that should be considered when using visual media in the classroom.
