Abstract

The transition into postsecondary education is a critical moment in the transition to adulthood. Many factors influence the likelihood that young people will attain a postsecondary degree. And programs like Career and Technical Education (CTE) are meant to improve graduates’ connection to the labor market; recently, CTE programs have also focused on improving college outcomes. Though research has documented the impact of CTE on employment outcomes, studies are still mixed on the role of CTE on degree attainment. This paper uses administrative data from the state of Texas to examine the relationship between CTE participation and postsecondary outcomes, particularly the attainment of 2- and 4-year degrees, to better understand the role that CTE plays in a successful transition to adulthood.
