A Critical Map of Racial and Spatial Equity in Rural Education Research

Abstract

Rural communities across the United States encompass socioeconomic, ethnoracial, cultural, and gender diversity, yet research on educational equity in rural contexts is difficult to identify and synthesize due to marginalization and isolation of this field of study. Our systematic literature review is informed by critical race theory and spatial in/justice, which we apply to explain and make sense of the last twenty years of rural education research. We have identified 214 peer-reviewed articles, collected from 19 academic journals, that directly address race and rural education. Our analysis documents how this research utilizes framings of equity along a continuum, from deficit-based to asset-based, that have clear implications for worsening, maintaining, or transforming structural and systemic inequities for rural communities of color.
