Developing Arts Teacher Leaders Through Professional Learning Communities

Sun, April 16, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

This project builds on research to address identified gaps in arts teachers’ leadership practices through professional learning communities (PLCs). The study examined differences over time in treatment and comparison arts teacher leaders in PLCs, specifically in their facilitation skills and their knowledge of formative assessment classroom practices, as well as their experiences with blended professional learning using technology. Arts teacher leader outcomes in the first two years of the study included increased PLC facilitation knowledge; increased knowledge of formative assessment to improve planning, instruction, and assessment; increased knowledge of how to effectively use blended professional learning; and effective leadership ratings from their PLC members.
