A Systematic Review of Color-Blind Racial Ideology and Its Influence on Education in the United States

Abstract

Colorblind racial ideology (CBRI) is the dominant racial ideology that sustains systemic inequities across social institutions in the United States. CBRI is associated with social dominance orientation, lower empathy, and decreased perspective taking. Among educators, this mindset manifests in deficit perceptions and may prevent educators from recognizing disparities that adversely impact students of color. This systematic review of literature examines the extent to which racial colorblindness has been researched in education and evaluates the influence of racial colorblindness on educational outcomes. A database search identified 42 studies that were screened, summarized, and synthesized for discussion. This review discusses the educational contexts in which colorblind racial ideology has been examined and the implications of extant findings.
