Sat, April 15, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 6th Floor, Northwestern/Ohio State

Abstract

This qualitative study explored how undergraduate students’ health, wellbeing, and learning were supported during the COVID-19 pandemic and recent racial reckoning. Semi-structured interviews with eight undergraduate students over the course of the 2021-22 school year provided insights into how students develop a sense of safety, belongingness, and purpose across their online and in-person relationships, particularly during times of crises. During this unique moment, students experienced shifts in their responsibilities to family alongside changes in their home and school lives, relied on reorganized online spaces to support their learning and wellbeing, and developed more nuanced identities through coursework and online forums. Additionally, students’ from historically marginalized communities shared opportunities for teaching and learning practices to more authentically attend to their realities.
