"Emulating Those Better Than Oneself": The Mechanism of Mentoring to Promote Teacher Professional Development

Abstract

Building a professional learning community is an effective way for teachers' professional development. There is a long-term and institutionally guaranteed teacher professional cooperation system in China. The mentoring system is representative and it has been proven to have great advantages.This research focuses on mentoring, and found out that the mentor influence apprentice’s teaching practice via influencing their values. The cultural and institutional background of mentoring in China is specific. Chinese people have a tendency of “emulating those better than oneself". This research pays attention to the roles of relationship atmosphere of democracy and cooperation in the mentoring system, and attempts to explain what kind of cultural and institutional environment the system needs.
