Abstract

A central challenge in designing an effective and efficient multisite trial is that the documentation of the novel design parameter— site-by-treatment variance — is lacking. Thus, the design efficiency and power potentially diminish because of the misspecification of this design parameter. In this study, we examine the impact of misspecifying the treatment heterogeneity parameter — the site-by-treatment variance — on the power and optimal sampling plans for multisite cluster randomized trials.
