In this roundtable, we will discuss the relationship between middle school students’ Incidental Information Literacy (Incidental-IL) and their skepticism, curiosity, persistence, and metacognition. We focused specifically on the information encountered incidentally (i.e., without actively being sought) online, particularly via social media platforms. 450 students in grades 6-9 took a 27-item researcher-created assessment of Incidental-IL and 4 pre-developed surveys that measure other constructs. Then 4 Incidental-IL high-performers completed a think aloud protocol, through which we collected qualitative evidence of the relationship among the constructs. This exploratory study aims to initiate a discussion regarding the relationship between middle school students’ Incidental-IL and related constructs. Both quantitative and qualitative findings will be shared in the roundtable session.
