Abstract

Likert scale was proposed in 1932 and has been used frequently in education and related fields since then. Despite the frequent use of Likert scales, the applicability of such scales has received much attention. Discussions on Likert scales include response biases, application in cross cultural research and research involving vulnerable groups, different responses due to the design or configuration of the items, and analysis strategies. To better understand the applicability of Likert scales and their alternatives, this paper aims to
(1) critically review literature on the concerns of applying Likert scales;
(2) identify alternatives to traditional Likert scales, including analysis strategies and computing tools; and
(3) provide recommendations for appropriate use of Likert scales and alternatives in education settings.
