Abstract

The study employed a document analysis to explore STEM and CTE educators conceptualized place-based education in a food systems context. Following a professional development event, fourteen teachers completed a guided reflection on ways to incorporate place-based education (PBE) as a way to contextualize real-world problems using the local culture, community, and careers. The results showed that teachers were able to make strong connections to the community but make weaker or shallow connections to culture and careers. Additionally, regardless of discipline, teachers demonstrated using interdisciplinary knowledge and extended beyond their primary content area when providing examples in their reflections. Further collaborations and professional development can deepen community connections and engagement, positively benefitting student learning, skill development, and community vitality.
