Abstract

Using narrative policy framework and critical discourse analysis, we unearth the stories and beliefs that are driving a set of Ohio bills, currently being considered in the state’s legislature. The bills prohibit discussions of race, sex and any topics deemed “divisive” content in Ohio’s public education system, with serious consequences for breaching the law. The bills are examples of efforts across the country that both reflect and fuel American public opinion around school curriculum, critical thought, and ideas of racial justice. We explore how such legislation could affect public goals for K-12 and Higher Education and consequently the preparation of citizens to engage in political life. Implications for democracy and democratic education are discussed.
