Persistencia: A Pscycho-Sociocultural Approach to Latinx Farmworking Mujeres at a Predominantly White Institution

Abstract

This study examines the persistence of Latinx Farmworking Mujeres (LFM) at a PWI through the support of the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). We utilize Castellanos & Gloria’s (2007) Psychosociocultural Framework for Latina/os in Higher Education to examine how LFM persist in higher education, specifically at a PWI. After conducting interviews with four LFM’s, we identify three common themes that align with our framework: Intersecting Identities as a form of Persistence and Resistance (Psychological); Commitment to Family & Community (Cultural); and Informal and Formal Mentoring (Social). This study can equip leaders with the tools necessary to inform future practices and policies that promote and accelerate Latinx Farmworker Mujeres college student success, persistence, and ultimately, matriculation.
