College Teaching Self-Efficacy Scale: Evaluating New Validity Evidence

Sun, April 16, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Missouri

Abstract

Increasingly, career pathways for doctoral graduates are at teaching universities where their primary responsibilities are teaching and public service rather than research. This study was designed to develop and examine the psychometric properties of a new measure of college teaching self-efficacy (CTSE) that could apply to various disciplines within higher education and to pre- and in-service college teachers. The first phase was the item generation based on a thorough literature review. The second phase included an independent sample (n=178) to validate the scale using confirmatory factor analysis. The results suggested that the 4-factor model with 18 items demonstrated the most parsimonious and acceptable measurement tool.
