Abstract

International organizations such as the World Bank fund both economic development schemes and education reform programs. In many cases the former contribute to processes of global warming and environmental degradation that undermine the conditions of possibility for the latter. This research examines the intersections of climate change and internationally-funded education programs in the global South. Drawing on theories of climate and environmental justice, this paper uses data from semi-structured interviews with teachers in six sites in Pakistan to examine these intersections, and in particular to examine teachers' experiences of and strategies for dealing with extreme heat in these contexts. Preliminary results highlight constraints on teachers’ ability to respond to climate issues, and lack of attention to those issues by policymakers.
