Highlighting the Experiences of Young Women of Color in Predominantly White Educational and Public Space

Abstract

This paper discusses my exploration of how a group of diverse young women of color discuss and annotate their movements through white curricular spaces of school and engage in public media. I highlight their unsung experiences through a multiple case study. The multiple case study enables me to understand how individual participants (cases) operate as a whole group in the shared spaces of school and media (Stake, 2006). Preliminary analysis suggests that participants resist depictions of diverse young women of color found in school and public spaces that are incongruent with the reality of their being. I also found that participants sometimes veil aspects of their personhood as a way of contending with inaccurate annotations and depictions.
