Although faculty of color (FOC) possess valuable expertise, they are underrepresented in policymaking contexts. The absence of their perspectives and expertise in policy processes can have momentous societal consequences (Harris, 2018). Our study engages the perspectives of tenure-stream FOC to examine how they perceive and describe institutional barriers to policy engagement and their recommendations for institutions of higher education (IHEs) to support this engagement. To do this, we employ intersectionality to better understand the lived experiences of FOC, particularly women of color, who experience marginalization due to their ethnoracial and gender identities (Crenshaw, 1991). This study illuminates how institutions can better respond to the needs of FOC when engaging with policy and other translational work (i.e., translating research for policy/practice).
