Has COVID Killed the Faculty Club? Assessing Its Origins, History, and Uncertain Future

Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

Faculty clubs have histories of exclusiveness and exclusion, yet their original mission still is a powerful one: bringing together a fragmented faculty. Examining their histories and their present-day uses will help make them more useful, effective institutions for a challenging future. Meeting together on campus as colleagues, even informally, broadcasts to the public the power of the faculty, and also creates a relaxed space where ideas and ideals may be shared and discussed on campus. As professors meet more and more in person, faculty clubs that are welcoming and useful to a new 21st century faculty might be able to survive, offering today’s professors new opportunities to come together to share ideas and build relationships.
