A Review About Gender and Sexual Diversity Topics in Teacher Education: A Contested Field

Abstract

In the last decade, school inclusion agendas have been implemented in different countries worldwide, and queer theory and feminism have been more present in society and academia. However, gender and sexual diversity (GSD) topics are marginalized within Teacher Education (TE) programs. This literature review focuses both on teacher educators’ strategies to include GSD topics and preservice teachers' responses. From 28 articles reviewed, we found that incorporating GSD topics responds to purposes such as transforming PSTs' heteronormative and addressing critical GSD issues in the classroom. Studies reported strong resistance and conflicts in some PSTs. The open class discussion appears as a relevant strategy, and it is consistent with the notion of developing a “culture of conversation” about GSD
