"The Fact Is That I'm Tired": Examining Teacher Burnout in Urban Black Female Educators

Abstract

The longstanding commitment of Black women in the education field must be acknowledged and is evident through the various role they fill, ranging from educational aide to superintendent. However, an increased focus on recruiting and retaining Black male educators has expounded upon the myth that Black female educators are thriving. The truth is that Black female educators are tired and are continuing to leave the teaching profession. We must begin to interrogate the racialized and sexualized experiences that exasperate Black women’s feelings of burnout. To this end, this qualitative study examines the truths of Black female educators in urban public schools across the United States and their experiences with teacher burnout.
