Value-Creating Leadership: A Thematic Analysis

Fri, April 14, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

This thematic analysis introduces the leadership perspectives of Japanese Buddhist leader, peacebuilder and international school system founder Daisaku Ikeda (b. 1928). We situate our work in the field of Ikeda/Soka Studies (Goulah, 2021) and coin the term “value-creating (Jpn. sōka) leadership” (Author, 2021) based on Ikeda, Toda [1900-1957], and Makiguchi’s [1871-1944] leadership approaches to actualize sōka kyōikugaku, or “value-creating pedagogy,” in schools and society (Goulah, 2021). Our analysis yielded the following findings: (1) the knowing of leadership: intellect and wisdom, (2) the being of leadership: the qualities and dispositions of a leader, and (3) the doing of leadership: actions and behaviors. We undertake this thematic analysis in order to establish a foundation for future empirical work in the field.
