Learning to View Golfing Bodies: Developing Professional Vision Through Embodied Reenactments (Poster 5)

Abstract

In performance-based settings, video analysis can support embodied reflection across time, space, and bodies. During these reflective encounters, coaches often use embodied reenactments to help students (athletes) make sense of their performance. Significantly, these embodied practices can orient how an athlete views performing bodies and practices. Using Goodwin’s (1994) notion of professional vision, I explore how a golf coach’s and student’s (pre-service coach) embodied reflective practices help to craft the students’ interpretation and understanding of golfing bodies. This research suggests that embodied forms of reflection and correction can be used to shape pre-service coaches’ professional vision.
