Abstract

Assessing the teaching of social and emotional skills to promote high-quality pedagogy is limited despite the spread of programming and the associated evidence. We share reliability and validity evidence for a newly developed measure of social and emotional teaching in early childhood settings: the Emotionally Intelligent Teaching Checklist (EITC). Observations of 175 teachers were collected in 56 preschools. Results bolster the EITC as a reliable and valid measure, especially juxtaposed with the widely-used Classroom Assessment Scoring System. EITC scores appeared independent of many characteristics, except race and ethnicity. Educators scoring higher also tended to have access to high-quality professional development. More is needed to contextualize the results based on community factors, systematic racism, and inequitable access to resources.
