Preparing Students for Work: Activities That Build Confidence in Career Plans and Skills

Abstract

Colleges and universities are under increased pressure to better prepare students for career and work, while efforts to improve the connection between college and employment have been challenged by the changing knowledge economy. This study presents evidence of students’ exposure to career education activities and analyzes the relationship to students’ perceptions of their career plans and skills. Results indicate the value of interpersonal career education activities, and experiences in courses or co-curriculars, as these are both related to outcomes but also varies by student identities. Information about exposure to career education activities and what benefits desired outcomes can provide guidance to colleges and universities about where to invest resources and to better integrate into educational pathways.
