Teacher Leadership Within an Expansive STEM Teacher Professional Network

Abstract

Teacher leaders recently have become a focus of school leaders and researchers because of their potential role in supporting educational reform. This research sought to investigate teacher leadership in an expansive STEM professional network, while also exploring the disciplinary nature of STEM teacher leadership using a previously developed community of practice teacher leadership identity model. The analysis revealed that leadership identity authoring for this professional network occurred as teachers engaged in four pursuits: 1) proposing, planning, and facilitating PD, 2) collaborating with peers, 3) working as a mentor for other teachers, and 4) communicating in a large group or to the public. This research provides insights into the complex roles teacher leaders authored in an expansive STEM teacher professional network.
