This study surveyed scholars who actively participate in digital social networks and use it for professional purposes. A total of 336 scholars completed an electronic survey with closed and open-ended questions. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and a team coding approach for qualitative data. The results of this investigation highlight specific motivations for using social media for teaching, academic support, research, and professional development. Scholars discussed benefits and challenges experiences when using digital social networks. Last, participants shared imaginary audiences who they perceived as potential viewers, followers, and connections when using social media for their scholarly endeavors. This investigation allows us to better understand how and why scholars use social media for professional fraternizing and academic support.
