Abstract

The last decade has seen a strong push to incorporate initiatives and learning that bolster students’ civic capacity and social engagement across higher education institutions in the United States. The current study aims to assess the civic orientations of graduate students via an existing instrument – the “Importance of Social Action Engagement” scale (Hurtado et al., 2002) - and to test that instrument’s content validity and reliability when applied to graduate students. Results indicated that the scale performed reasonably well to measure civic orientation among graduate students.
