Leading With Hope During Times of Crisis

Abstract

Existing research has indicated that leaders are typically ill-equipped to respond to crises. Hope is a critical element in this recovery process for leaders. Yet less is known about how leaders use hope to navigate crises. Freire (2021) contributes to our understanding of how hope is manifested in educational leadership by expanding our conceptualizations of educational leadership and facilitating pragmatic responses to crises. This qualitative inquiry reports how 50 principals across the U.S. respond to a crisis using hope as a catalyst for change. Using thematic analysis, I found all principals reported having some degree of hope while most reported having high hope. Implications for preparation and leadership are discussed.
