Pharmaceutical Elegance: The Intersection of Aesthetic Literacies and Labor Preparation in Career and Technical Education

Abstract

This presentation draws from a multiple-case study of two classrooms in a career-technical education (CTE) high school in a Midwestern U.S. city. I examine a focal language and literacy event in a 12th grade pharmacy technician classroom in which the teacher introduces the concept of pharmaceutical elegance, which she reinforces through a subsequent learning activity. Using discourse analysis and drawing on Nelson and Hull’s (2009) proposed aesthetic turn in literacy studies, I examine the literacy event in the CTE classroom and begin to conceptualize the heuristic of workplace aesthetic literacies.
