Design as Distance: Alternative Frames for the Construction of Qualitative Research Studies

Abstract

The notion of qualitative research design has been parsed and parceled to ubiquity. Discussions of design either begin and end with terminology specific to that strategy, honoring experts who conjured a recipe (or a critique of a recipe), while others push back with generic qualitative designs. Scholars should be able to situate their methods within the corpus of qualitative research design, but not at the cost of exploring innovative design approaches or blending design elements. This tension was the impetus for this paper in which we focus on design as distance and framing qualitative design. We develop our arguments with each other and for our audience using verbal and visual dialogue by exploring our personal and shared epistemologies regarding design.
