Measuring Computational Thinking Through Modeling Problem-Solving Processes in Game-Based Learning

Abstract

Educational games are believed to be a viable environment for students’ computational thinking (CT) development. In games, students engage in complex interactive environments to solve different computational problems. This study reports a model that is built to represent students’ problem-solving process and its relationship to students’ CT skills in a game-based learning (GBL) environment. The preliminary results identify two unique states (i.e., solution construction and problem/solution evaluation) in students’ problem-solving processes. In addition, the proportion of solution construction is negatively related to students’ CT skills.
