"But Where's the Book?" Valuing Equity-Minded and Community-Engaged Scholarship at Mid-Career

Abstract

Research points to challenges in advancement to the rank of full professor among scholars from underrepresented groups, often attributed to institutional factors. Research also highlights the value of equity-minded and community-engaged research, but identifies it as a potential risk factor to career advancement within the traditional norms of the academy. There is a need to better support midcareer scholarly excellence among those who are engaged in equity- and community-focused scholarship, particularly those from underrepresented groups. This multi-year study points to themes in the experiences of such scholars within the context of one research university, related to the nature of their scholarly productivity as well as perceived barriers and supports. Findings generate implications for research and practice.
