This study investigates socialization experiences of faculty teaching required undergraduate diversity courses at Big Ten Academic Alliance institutions. Through analysis of interviews with tenure track and non-tenure-track faculty, we offer a conceptualization of socialization to DEI teaching. This framework highlights two overlapping social roles of instructor: university teacher and DEI educator. Through a socialization framework, we explore how these simultaneous but asymmetrical social role acquisition processes operate. We find both tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty perceive fit as university instructors, but remain in a state of consistently (re)assessing fit as DEI educators, despite little formal socialization for either role.
