This paper applies multiple methods to the study of an individual’s in-the-moment engagement in discussion of mathematical tasks. This approach is an interrogation of typical educational research on engagement, which tends to focus exclusively on one or two aspects of engagement—or one or two data sources—rather than considering the construct comprehensively. Mathematics education research on classroom discussion particularly centers verbal participation. Focusing on the case of one preservice elementary teacher’s engagement across four discussions of mathematical tasks in a mathematics methods course, the results demonstrate how the representation of the participant’s engagement grew and changed as additional and increasingly complex methods were applied.
