Leadership pipelines are effective ways to prepare leaders to improve school performance and culture. Pipelines require coordination across central office departments; however, little guidance exists. This paper examines the ways districts structure central office operations to support leadership pipelines. We use survey and interview data to examine the relationship between central office organization and districts’ ability to implement a leadership pipeline. We find that team size, organization, and departmental involvement varied by district size. Regardless of district context, districts reporting small core teams had a higher capacity for pipelines. Our analysis finds that central office structures can support or inhibit pipeline capacity and provides insight to the development small, collaborative teams to build and maintain district capacity for leadership pipelines.
