Abstract

The study examined the impact of intercultural training on new teachers’ intercultural competency using an experimental pre-posttest control group design. The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI®) was developed based on Bennett’s (1993) Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) that identified stages of intercultural development. The IDI® was administered to a sample of 58 new teachers randomly assigned to experimental and control groups receiving four months of intercultural training. Results showed the experimental group had significantly improved their intercultural competency, increasing by one intercultural developmental orientation stage. The control group showed no significant change. The study’s findings support inclusion of intercultural training in education, social justice, diversity, and equity programs.
